When hiring a new individual or looking at retaining good employees, one of the key factors is understanding their motivating factors for staying in the job, and thriving. While this may seem obvious, it is a rare thing that HR departments or managers seek out this information and act on it.
Employees are human beings, but are often treated like machines, even in today’s more progressive work environment. Employment is a two-way street. Consider what works for the both of you.
The simplest way to find out an employee’s motivating factors is to ask! Ask them what makes them feel fulfilled, what makes them tick. They will feel flattered you asked. For some employees, it could be that they want to feel appreciated, others may want security, etc. Managers can make small adjustments that will motivate and fulfill an employee, thus radically increasing productivity.
